KORPRATE KORNERAs an individual on the corporate front lines, I feel it is my duty to report what REALLY happens. April 2007 Time for a new JobThough a lot of variables may affect your particular situation, it's generally accepted that folks have to jump around in my industry in order to move forward in their career. The key reason for that: Bad bosses, poor recognition, poor pay, and lack of advancement opportunities. I of course have to disclaim this - there are always going to be individuals who: 1) Cannot move forward due to their own limitations and 2) Lack the true ambition to move forward in their careers. Apart from those people, there are many individuals, myself included, have that ambition, have the experience, but don't have the correct opportunity. I made the unusual choice of staying with my company over 5 years before moving on. Why? I had the ability to move forward. It doesn't always have to be a promotion - it can just be more money recognizing the important role you play within your company. It was only because of a combination of money and opportunity that I left me last job - but I left on good terms, so I feel I could return someday down the road, if the right opportunity reaches my ears. Corporations need to realize that PEOPLE are their lifeblood - especially in a service business! And the superstars will get notice by your competitors - so don't get them any reason to leave. Reward them for their service to the company. As I have said many times before - anywhere you go, anything you do, keep your eyes and ears open to new positions. You are the only person who cares about your career - not your boss and certainly not your company. The only way to move forward is to be proactive. I felt the need to write today instead of recording my voice. I my mix this up again down the road. I wish you luck on all of your endeavors.
